The U15 Schoolgirls finished their season on a high with victory over Callan United away on Sunday afternoon. The first half was a close tight affair with few chances, mainly due to the hard bumpy pitch. Thomastown, despite having a depleted squad with a couple of girls from the U13 team called up, began to to exert more pressure and their efforts paid off when they were awarded a penalty for handball. Kate Ryan stood up and hammered home to the girls a deserved lead.

Player of the match, Lily Maher, fired home a second shortly after with a superb strike from the box despite the best efforts of the Callan goalkeeper but the power and accuracy of the strike proved too much. The Thomastown girls controlled the rest of the game and ran out comfortable 2-0 winners.

A Note on the Game:

The game was scheduled for 13:00 in CBS Callan but it was almost 13:30 before the referee arrived, This was due too the fact that the assigned referee had to referee a Junior 3 Cup Final at 11:00 in Newpark Kilkenny. A Junior match is 45 minutes aside with a half time break and the possibility of injury time, this results in approximately a 2 hour allowance for a game start to finish. also allowing for the fact it was a cup final with a chance of extra time and penalties, there was no way possible for the referee to be in Callan for a 13:00 kickoff time. Poor planning by the Kilkenny League!! To be fair to the referee, Michael McLoughlin, as it was not his fault but he apologised to all the girls on both teams.
