What a weekend for our U12 girls blue team. They started Saturday with a home league game vs Kilkenny United & came away with an emphatic victory to put them joint top of the league table with Spa United. Scorers on the day were Aoibhinn Kelly with 5, Lily Dimond helped herself to 2 & 1 each for Sarah Collins, Bella Quaglia & Siofra Croke O’Neill. With the first part of the double header wrapped up the girls moved onto the main event with a trip to Dungarvan on the Sunday in the SFAI cup. Up against a very strong Dungarvan team the girls started well & had a lot of possession without creating any clear cut chances. Unfortunately the home team took the lead after 15 minutes with their first attack. The girls didn’t let the heads drop & were unlucky not to equalise before half time with good chances falling to Aoibhinn Kelly & Bella Quaglia. 1 down at half time & Dungarvan started the second half showing what a good team they are & had Thomastown under serious pressure for the first 10 minutes. With 15 to go Thomastown made substitutions & tactical changes which had an instant impact. Aoibhinn Kelly moved to centre forward & went on a superb run through the middle which the Dungarvan centre half did well to stop but the ball fell to Bella who hammered home the equaliser.
Thomastown were flying now & the 2 girls up front were causing havoc. The winner arrived with 10 to go & what goal it was. Aoibhinn’s goal bound shot was saved by the keeper & the ball rebounded out to Bella who hit it on the volley from 15 yards to send the away supporters wild. The last 10 minutes were frantic as Dungarvan went in the search of the equaliser but some heroic defending from all the girls kept them at bay. It was a high quality game and Thomastown now progress to the last 32 nationally. Impossible to pick a player of the match but a special mention to our two U10 girls Siofra Croke O’ Neill & Sarah Collins who were outstanding from start to finish.
