Thomastown U16 Boys started their league campaign with a trip to Freshford who are managed by former Thomastown player Daffy Roche. Freshford started strongly & had the away team under the cosh from the off. They took the lead under fortuitous circumstances when a shot from the edge of the box was touched onto the post by keeper Aaron Darcy only to bounce off the post & into the net off Aaron's back. Freshford kept the pressure up & only for some good saves from Aaron they would have been further ahead. Thomastown equalised against the run of play when new signing Cian Courtney beat the offside trap & held off the defender to coolly finish to the bottom corner. The away team were starting to grow in confidence now & took the lead from the penalty spot. Kian McCaul was upended by the centre half & captain Adam Arthurs dispatched the penalty. The away team were leading 2-1 at half time without playing well. Thomastown started the second half much better & took the game to Freshford. Liam Thompson switched to centre forward & his direct running led to Thomastown's third goal. He broke through the Freshford rear guard & laid the ball back to Cian Courtney who finished brilliantly with a chip into the top corner. Thomastown were rampant now & made it four when Jack Hearne whipped in a corner which Kian McCaul controlled & sent a half volley to the back of the net. With Thomastown's back four playing well the game looked comfortably until a free kick from all of 40 yards found its way to the roof of the net. With 5 minutes left another free kick managed to evade everyone in the away team's box & bounce into the net. This set up a tense finish but Thomastown managed to hold on for a great victory against a good Freshford team. Cian Courtney got two on his debut & his pace caused plenty of problems. In defence Jack Kiely & Conal Tobin played very well especially when the pressure came on in the last few minutes.
