Our U12 girls blue team travelled to Castlecomer for their first league match & got off to the perfect start when Rachel Dunne scored a belter from outside the box within 30 seconds. Thomastown dominated possession & territory for the first half but could not find a second goal. The away team came close with Ava Begley finding the side netting & Aoibhinn Kelly beating several defenders but unable to find the finish. Into the second half & the Thomastown United girls continued to dominate. Siofra Croke O’Neill had a shot from distance which forced the keeper into a good save. With our back 3 of Saoirse Roche, Lily Dimond & Sarah Collins in complete control it allowed our front 5 to press on.
It took until injury time to make the game safe for Thomastown but it was worth the wait. Aoibhinn Kelly was upended on one of her trademark runs & Thomastown were awarded a free from a tight angle on the right hand side of the box. Up stepped the naturally right footed Ava Begley who curled a left footed shot into the top corner after some sage advice from coach John (the Lack) Lancashire.
It was an unbelievable finish & it was well deserved after a brilliant performance from all the girls.
Player of the match goes to Rachel Dunne who was excellent in her role as 6 & scored a belter too.
